Bowie Best Buy Converting, Not Leaving

The Best Buy located at the Bowie Town Center is closing by the end of September for an anticipated outlet conversion.

The Best Buy Outlet currently situated in Lutherville is expected to relocate to Bowie in 2024 once the remodel is complete.

A clearance sale is underway to unload merchandise ahead of the work. A similar clearance and remodel was conducted at the Annapolis Best Buy earlier this year.

This is part of a larger trend of retailers closing, moving, and remodeling stores. Best Buy announced earlier this year they plan to close 17 stores in 2023.

Stores in Tennessee, Missouri, Minnesota, California, Texas, and Illinois, have already shuttered, with closures expected to continue through 2025.

CEO Corie Sue Barry stated Best Buy will close 15 to 20 traditional large-format stores yearly. The chief factor determining closures is store performance, with decisions made near lease expirations.

The good news for in-person shoppers is Best Buy is opening 10 new outlet stores, remodeling some medium sized stores, and developing eight experiential stores.

The focus according to Best Buy will be improving sales and driving efficiency as the retail company navigates a changing marketplace. More and more customers are moving to digital sales while physical store rents and labor costs continue to rise.

Best Buy revenue was down 10 percent in the last quarter, which the retailer attributed largely to inflation. The company anticipates another rough year for the electronics retail industry ahead, but says they will continue to adapt.

Best Buy continues to operate 925 stores throughout the US with just shy of 100,000 employees.
