City Expands Speed Camera Locations
After a year of lobbying, debate, and study, the city is implementing a new Safe Speed Camera Program expanding on its existing school zone speed cameras.
A change in state law last year allowed area municipalities to expand speed cameras to residential areas. Originally, the city could only operate local speed cameras in school zones.
The new cameras will operate 24/7 in 21 new locations, with planned additions next year.
The cameras come after an especially intense year of vocal resident complaints about neighborhood speeding.
"It's gotten worse in the ten years we've been here," said one resident at a council meeting this fall. "There's families with kids moving to the area and more people are out walking than ever. It's an accident waiting to happen."
The City Police Department is managing the speed program. There is a 30-day warning period during which drivers caught speeding will only receive a warning. After the 30 day starting period, the camera program will issue citations.
Citations are $40 and are issued when cameras clock motorists exceeding the speed limit by 12 miles per hour.
